Proposals
The following are ideas & proposals of public projects/infrastructure in Gangtok by individuals/architecture firms.
Arithang- Streets for People
These proposals were submissions for the 'Streets for People Challenge', and sought to reimagine the streets & neighbourhood of Lower Arithang.
Baansghari- Bamboo Pavilion
The rooftop of Lal Market Complex in Gangtok, Sikkim is an interesting space to experience because of the wide range of activities being carried out there. Temporary markets pop up on this rooftop every month. Visitors like to enjoy the scenic beauty and grab a cup of tea at the fast food kiosk. The pavilion aims to mimic the form of the undulating hills as can be seen from the very rooftop.
Bhanugram
PPA was hired was a consultant for CURE (Centre for Urban and Regional Excellence), a not-for-profit development organization working with urban informal and low-income communities working under the RAY (Rajiv Awas Yojana) initiative.
Citizen's Heritage Park
A public park in the heart of the city, respecting its history, built around the heritage STNM building as the centre of the park.
Growth Matrix for Gangtok
The economic nature of a thriving city is its magnetic pull on people and therefore exponential growth. Gangtok has transformed into a fast growing city without planning, resulting in a steadily degrading built environment and a deteriorating quality of life. The urban growth of Gangtok needs a shape and pattern that can absorb growth while sustaining a good built environment and quality of life.
Jhoras of Gangtok
The proposal aims to reimagine Jhoras as age-friendly public spaces that enable safer, healthier, and dignified living in the inner city. The design tries to address many issues at once - infrastructural, environmental, and social. It tries to illustrate the possibilities to improve the existing living condition and create pockets of vibrant neighborhoods in the city.
Lall Bazaar Terrace Plaza
Due to rapid urbanisation & massive increase in the population of Gangtok... there is an acute shortage of open space and the need to utilise this space poses a great challenge for urban planners and architects alike.
Linear City
The Teesta Valley between Singtam and Rangpo is already quite densely populated and industrialised with many work places, education institutions, infrastructure [power grid station, lpg etc], factories [pharma, construction, food, utilities] plus there's a railway station coming up. This stretch is growing randomly at the moment and the people who work there lack good homes.
MG Marg- Streets for People
An initiative to involve the people in the design of public spaces through well facilitated public consultation sessions.
Tourist Facilitation Centre
With the ever growing progressive status of tourism industry, the tourism department has been working on creating better services for the visitors to enhance their stay with quality tourism infrastructure. Gangtok, capital of Sikkim caters to all tourists visiting various destinations, requiring added Inner Line Permission covering international border territory. The existing infrastructure being spread out and inadequate leads to inconvenience for the visitors.
