Linear City

Studio Interweave

The Teesta Valley between Singtam and Rangpo is already quite densely populated and industrialised with many work places, education institutions, infrastructure [power grid station, lpg etc], factories [pharma, construction, food, utilities] plus there's a railway station coming up. This stretch is growing randomly at the moment and the people who work there lack good homes.

Concept

  • An unplanned urban sprawl is undesirable because of its impact on the environment, low quality of living and inefficient use of resources.

  • The Teesta valley strip between Singtam and Rangpo to be considered as one unit / city.

  • Plan this strip with the consultation of the stakeholders to create create quality habitation and a very livable city. [the growth matrix (plrase refer to sheet Growth matrix for Gangtok) has been used here as a tool to plan quality habitation]

  • The River as a strong identity and the spirit of the city.

Very interesting. Quite practical. Must be done with government. Implementing org. Concept of recycling water is great/sustainable. But a survey at citizen level should be taken for better clarity.

This plan has been discussed and planned from every dimension and perspective, encompassing all stakeholders. Loved it and hope at least some factors are taken into consideration by the GOS.

Linear city doesn't seem to have a proper pedestrian idea (in fact the stretch from rangpo to mazitar especially the market area). Accidents have occurred here.

Here's what people had to say about it
